The Icon

I am often told that the Zirkel icon is similar to the Yin Yang sign. I do not reject the idea, but the resemblance is not intentional. It „just happened“ along the way and I did not even notice it myself.
The idea for the icon was very simple: show what the game is about. The game is about flames which move on rings. Why not show something of that? And so I did in the first versions of the icon:

First Zirkel Icon
The very first icon for ZIRKEL (when it did not have a name yet).
The second version is almost a screenshot from the game.

Both versions do not work well on small sizes. They also are not very „sharp“ and iconic. Especially the first one looks generic. So I iterated on the „ring with flame“ idea until I came up with this:

Much more stylized but way to flashy. It also looks a lot like a head with hair.
Much more stylized but a bit too flat and garish.. It also looks a lot like a head with hair.

Much better and very close to the final thing but I was not perfectly satisfied, so I played around a little bit more:

Rotated the main shape a bit and cut off the tail…

Very near to the final icon. I tried to make the flame out a bit more.

Nah… one of them looks a like a pollywog (or something else 😉 ), and the other one is just cheesy. Let’s make it simple again:

The final icon. Subtle, iconic and stylish.
The final icon. Subtle, iconic and stylish.

So there it is. Iconic but not completely flat, thanks to the subtle gradient in the background and the icon itself plus a dark inner glow to the square. I really like how it pops out from the home screen while still not looking „plastic“.

Also, the subtle background variance is not crucial for recognition. Because of  this I can use the key component (the circle) without the background for several occasions (like on the website). I could even use it on a fax machine! 😀

What do you think? Let me know!
